Flóra: new workshop-store in Akureyri with recycled and new products
Hangers of wire from the cleaners are bend to new artistic hooks, disused wine bottles are decorated with ornate engraving – that´s it: beautiful new products recycled from old once. „I sell recyclable and recycled products as well as new merchandise, but this is produced directly in home industries or small producers,“ said Kristín Þóra Kjartansdóttir about the idea of her newly opened workshop store Flóra. Kristín knows all the Icelandic and German manufacturers in person or have talked to them extensively about the production. „The important thing to me is that I know where things come from and how and where they are manufactured.“ Exception is the coffee of Kaffismiðja Íslands. With the excellent coffee roaster inside Sonja Björk Einarsdóttir Grant and Ingibjörg Jóna Sigurðardóttir from Reykjavík roast the beans right in the café in Reykjavík and they know the origin of the beans.
Kristín Þóra, who studied in Germany, has created place in the center of Akureyri in the north of Iceland where small businessmen, artists and craftsmen sell their things. For customers Kristín opens a warm, lovingly designed place for browsing, shopping and cozy chatting by a coffee or tea. From the store a wooden staircase leads up to a small gallery with Kristin’s desk where she works outside the opening times as a professional sociologist and teacher. In the basement of the store is space for exhibitions and smaller events.
